The balanced chemical equation for the reaction of carbon with a limited supply of oxygen to produce carbon monoxide is:

C(s) + 1/2 O2(g) → CO(g)

Here, the stoichiometric ratios are 1:1/2:1 for C, O2, and CO respectively. The physical states are solid (s) for Carbon, gas (g) for Oxygen, and gas (g) for Carbon Monoxide.

However, in most cases, fractional stoichiometric coefficients are not preferred. So, we multiply the entire equation by 2 to get rid of the fraction:

2C(s) + O2(g) → 2CO(g)

Now, the stoichiometric ratios are 2:1:2 for C, O2, and CO respectively.
