  1. Sickle Cell Disease: This disease is caused by a mutation in the HBB gene which provides instructions for making a protein called beta-globin, a component of hemoglobin. Under certain conditions, hemoglobin S molecules can clump together and distort red blood cells into a sickle shape, which can cause blockages in blood vessels and a shortage of red blood cells (anemia).
