Solution

The Earth's atmosphere is composed of several layers, each with its own unique characteristics and functions. These layers, from closest to the Earth's surface to farthest, are the Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, and Exosphere.

  1. Troposphere: This is the layer closest to the Earth's surface, extending up to about 8-15 kilometers. It contains about 75% of the atmosphere's total mass and 99% of its water vapor. This is the layer where weather phenomena occur. The troposphere plays a crucial role in maintaining life by providing the air we breathe and regulating the Earth's temperature.

  2. Stratosphere: Above the troposphere, extending up to about 50 kilometers, is the stratosphere. This layer contains the ozone layer, which absorbs and scatters the solar ultraviolet radiation. Without the ozone layer, life on Earth would be exposed to harmful UV radiation.

  3. Mesosphere: This layer extends from the stratosphere up to about 85 kilometers. Meteors burn up in this layer upon entering the Earth's atmosphere, protecting the Earth from potential meteor impacts.

  4. Thermosphere: This layer extends from the mesosphere up to about 600 kilometers. The thermosphere absorbs a large amount of the Sun's harmful X-ray and UV radiation, protecting life on Earth. This is also the layer where the Northern and Southern Lights occur.

  5. Exosphere: This is the outermost layer, extending from the thermosphere up to about 10,000 kilometers. It is mainly composed of hydrogen and helium. Satellites orbit in this layer.

Each of these layers plays a crucial role in maintaining life and regulating Earth's climate. They protect life on Earth from harmful solar radiation, facilitate weather phenomena, and provide the air we breathe.
