Solution

The Earth's atmosphere is divided into five main layers: the Troposphere, the Stratosphere, the Mesosphere, the Thermosphere, and the Exosphere.

  1. Troposphere: This is the lowest layer of the atmosphere, extending from the Earth's surface up to about 8 kilometers at the poles and about 17 kilometers at the equator. This layer contains about 75% of the atmosphere's mass and 99% of its water vapor. This is the layer where all weather occurs.

  2. Stratosphere: Above the troposphere, extending up to about 50 kilometers above the Earth's surface, is the stratosphere. This layer holds the ozone layer, which absorbs and scatters the solar ultraviolet radiation.

  3. Mesosphere: The mesosphere extends from the stratosphere up to about 85 kilometers above the Earth. Meteors burn up in this layer.

  4. Thermosphere: This layer extends from the mesosphere up to about 600 kilometers. The Northern and Southern Lights occur in the thermosphere.

  5. Exosphere: This is the outermost layer of the Earth's atmosphere, extending from the thermosphere up to about 10,000 kilometers. This layer is mainly composed of hydrogen and helium.
