Solution

Crevice corrosion is a type of localized corrosion which occurs in confined spaces (crevices) to which the access of the working fluid from the environment is limited. The following attributes contribute to crevice corrosion:

  1. Stagnant Conditions: Crevice corrosion often occurs in stagnant conditions, where the movement of fluid is limited. This can occur in areas such as under gaskets, washers, insulation material, fastener heads, surface deposits, and disbonded coatings.

  2. Concentration Cells: Crevice corrosion is often caused by concentration cells, where there is a difference in ion concentration between the crevice and the bulk fluid. This can lead to a difference in potential and cause corrosion.

  3. Material Susceptibility: Certain materials are more susceptible to crevice corrosion than others. For example, stainless steels, nickel-based alloys, and aluminium alloys are particularly susceptible.

  4. Temperature: Higher temperatures can increase the rate of crevice corrosion.

  5. Presence of Chlorides: Chlorides can greatly increase the susceptibility of a material to crevice corrosion. This is particularly a problem in marine environments.

  6. pH Levels: Lower pH levels (more acidic conditions) can increase the risk of crevice corrosion.

  7. Oxygen Concentration: Lower oxygen concentrations inside the crevice can lead to crevice corrosion. This is because the lack of oxygen can lead to the formation of a concentration cell, as described above.
