Solution

(a) Corrosion: Corrosion is a natural process that converts a refined metal into a more chemically stable form such as oxide, hydroxide, or sulfide. It is the gradual destruction of materials (usually metals) by chemical and/or electrochemical reaction with their environment. For example, rusting of iron is a well-known form of corrosion. When iron comes into contact with water and oxygen, it can turn into iron oxide, which we commonly call rust.

(b) Rancidity: Rancidity is a condition in which the substance containing fat and oil gets oxidized and it leads to an unpleasant smell and taste. For example, when you leave a piece of butter or oil outside for a long time, it can become rancid. The fats and oils in the butter or oil react with the oxygen in the air to produce peroxides and hydroperoxides, leading to the unpleasant smell and taste.
