a) Rights and Duties of Employees in the Employment Act, 2006 of Uganda:

Rights:

  1. Right to form or join trade unions and to bargain collectively.
  2. Right to equal pay for work of equal value.
  3. Right to rest and reasonable working hours.
  4. Right to fair treatment and freedom from discrimination.
  5. Right to a healthy and safe working environment.
  6. Right to protection against sexual harassment in the workplace.
  7. Right to maternity leave for female employees.
  8. Right to protection against forced labor.
  9. Right to protection against child labor.
  10. Right to termination notice and payment in lieu of notice.

Duties:

  1. Duty to perform the work as agreed in the contract.
  2. Duty to obey lawful and reasonable orders from the employer.
  3. Duty to take reasonable care for the safety and health of themselves and other persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions at the workplace.
  4. Duty to cooperate with the employer or any other person in the discharge of any duty or requirement imposed on the employer or that person by any law.
  5. Duty not to disclose any confidential information about the business of the employer.

b) Rights and Duties of an Employer according to the Employment Act, 2006 of Uganda:

Rights:

  1. Right to direct and control how the employee does the job.
  2. Right to expect a certain standard of conduct and work performance.
  3. Right to terminate the employment contract under lawful circumstances.
  4. Right to change the terms of employment with the agreement of the employee.
  5. Right to expect loyalty from the employee.

Duties:

  1. Duty to pay remuneration and provide the terms and conditions of employment.
  2. Duty to ensure the health, safety, and welfare at work of all his or her employees.
  3. Duty to provide work for the employee unless there is a valid reason not to.
  4. Duty to treat employees fairly and not to discriminate against any employee.
  5. Duty to respect the rights of employees to join trade unions and to bargain collectively.
  6. Duty to provide a written statement of particulars of employment.
  7. Duty to provide a safe working environment.
  8. Duty to provide training to employees where necessary.
