When you breathe out, also known as exhalation, the following happens:

  1. Your diaphragm relaxes: The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle at the bottom of your chest. When it relaxes, it moves upward into the chest cavity.

  2. Your intercostal muscles relax: These muscles are located between your ribs. When they relax, your rib cage gets smaller, decreasing the space in your chest cavity.

  3. Decreased chest cavity size: As the space in your chest cavity gets smaller, the pressure inside it increases.

  4. Air is forced out: The increase in pressure forces air out of your lungs and out of your body.

So, in summary, the pressure in your chest increases when you breathe out.
