What happens to your ribcage when you breathe out?
Question
What happens to your ribcage when you breathe out?
Solution
When you breathe out, the following steps occur:
-
Your diaphragm, a dome-shaped muscle at the bottom of your lungs, relaxes and moves upwards into the chest cavity.
-
The intercostal muscles between your ribs also relax, causing your ribcage to contract or move downwards and inwards.
-
This decrease in space in your chest cavity increases the pressure on your lungs.
-
The increased pressure forces air out of your lungs and out through your nose or mouth.
-
This process is known as exhalation or breathing out.
