What happens to your diaphragm when you breathe out?

When you breathe out, also known as exhalation, your diaphragm relaxes and moves upward into the chest cavity. This reduces the space in your chest cavity and increases the pressure, which forces air out of your lungs. Here are the steps:

1. The first step in the process of breathing out, or exhalation, is the relaxation of the diaphragm. After you have taken a breath in, the diaphragm relaxes.

2. As the diaphragm relaxes, it moves upward into the chest cavity. This is the opposite of what happens when you breathe in, when the diaphragm contracts and moves downward to allow more space for the lungs to expand.

3. The upward movement of the diaphragm reduces the space in the chest cavity. This is because the diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle that separates the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity. When it moves upward, it decreases the volume of the chest cavity.

4. The reduction in space in the chest cavity increases the pressure inside it. According to Boyle's law, pressure and volume are inversely related. So, when the volume decreases, the pressure increases.

5. The increase in pressure forces air out of the lungs. This is because air moves from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure. So, the high pressure in the chest cavity compared to the lower pressure outside the body forces air out of the lungs and out of the body.

6. This process continues until all the air is expelled from the lungs, at which point the process of inhalation begins again.
