The experiment used to show the power of authority was conducted by Stanley Milgram. This experiment, known as the Milgram Experiment, was a series of social psychology experiments conducted in the 1960s. The participants were instructed to play the role of a "teacher" and administer electric shocks to a "learner" (who was actually an actor and not receiving real shocks) every time they answered a question incorrectly. The purpose of the experiment was to demonstrate the willingness of ordinary individuals to obey an authority figure who instructed them to perform acts that conflicted with their personal conscience.
