The experiment used to show the influence of environment was conducted by Zimbardo. This is known as the Stanford Prison Experiment. In this study, Zimbardo converted a basement of the Stanford University psychology building into a mock prison. He randomly assigned college students to play the role of prisoners or guards. The experiment quickly got out of hand, with "guards" exhibiting sadistic behavior and "prisoners" showing signs of extreme stress and anxiety. This experiment demonstrated how social roles and expectations can influence behavior.
