One end of a spring is attached to a wall and Jamie pulls on the other end of the spring with a force of 250 N, stretching the spring by 20.0 cm. If Jason takes the end of the spring off of the wall and they both pull the spring with a force of 250 N, how far will the spring stretch? 20.0 40.0 10.0 200.

Solution

The spring's stretch is directly proportional to the force applied to it. This is known as Hooke's Law. When Jamie pulls the spring with a force of 250 N, it stretches 20.0 cm.

If Jason also pulls the spring with a force of 250 N, the total force on the spring is now 500 N. Since the stretch is directly proportional to the force, the spring will stretch twice as much as before.

So, if 250 N of force caused a 20.0 cm stretch, then 500 N of force will cause a 40.0 cm stretch.

Therefore, the spring will stretch 40.0 cm.
