Solution

The equation for the cracking of the alkane C20H42 is:

C20H42 → 2C4H8 + 2C2H4 + .....

To complete the equation, we need to balance the number of carbon and hydrogen atoms on both sides of the equation.

On the left side, we have 20 carbon atoms and 42 hydrogen atoms. On the right side, we currently have 12 carbon atoms (8 from 2C4H8 and 4 from 2C2H4) and 24 hydrogen atoms (16 from 2C4H8 and 8 from 2C2H4).

So, we need to add 8 more carbon atoms and 18 more hydrogen atoms on the right side.

The simplest way to do this is to add 4 molecules of C2H6 (ethane) to the right side of the equation. Each molecule of C2H6 contains 2 carbon atoms and 6 hydrogen atoms, so 4 molecules will give us the 8 carbon atoms and 24 hydrogen atoms we need.

So, the completed equation is:

C20H42 → 2C4H8 + 2C2H4 + 4C2H6
