For Activity 9, post your reflection on the material from the screencast and from the Web resources with some self-reflection. Your reflection should highlight key points you felt were important and focus on strategies you may not have encountered before viewing this material. It should also exclude two personal examples - one of an experience where you have used the best practices you explore this week and a second where you violated them. Remember that this course is a safe space, so please be honest without any fear of judgment.

Solution

After reviewing the screencast and web resources for Activity 9, I found several key points to be particularly impactful. Firstly, the importance of active listening was emphasized. This is not just about hearing the words that are being said, but truly understanding and engaging with the speaker's message. This is a strategy I had not fully appreciated before, but I can see how it would greatly improve communication and understanding in both personal and professional settings.

Secondly, the material highlighted the importance of clear and concise communication. This involves being direct and to the point, while also ensuring that the message is fully understood. This is a strategy that I had not encountered before, but I can see how it would be beneficial in avoiding misunderstandings and ensuring effective communication.

Reflecting on my own experiences, I can recall a situation where I effectively used these best practices. During a group project at university, I made a conscious effort to actively listen to my team members and communicate my ideas clearly and concisely. This resulted in a successful project and positive feedback from my peers.

On the other hand, I can also recall a situation where I violated these best practices. During a family discussion, I found myself becoming defensive and not truly listening to what my family members were saying. I also struggled to communicate my feelings clearly, which led to misunderstandings and unnecessary conflict.

Reflecting on these experiences, I can see the importance of the strategies highlighted in the material. I will make a conscious effort to implement these strategies in my future interactions.

Self-reflection is important to learning, and to performing in everyday life (including studying, work, and personal life). Like any skill, it is something that we improve at with practice.
