How do bacteria differ from viruses?

Bacteria and viruses differ in many ways. Here are some key differences:

1. Cellular Structure: Bacteria are complex, single-celled organisms with a rigid cell wall. They have all the components necessary for their growth and reproduction. Viruses, on the other hand, are much smaller and simpler. They do not have a cellular structure and cannot reproduce on their own. They need to infect a host cell and use its machinery to replicate.

2. Size: Bacteria are larger than viruses. The average bacterium is about 1,000 nanometers in size, while viruses range from 20 to 400 nanometers.

3. Reproduction: Bacteria reproduce through a process called binary fission, where one bacterium divides into two. Viruses, however, must infect a host cell and use its machinery to make copies of themselves.

4. Treatment: Antibiotics can kill bacteria or stop them from reproducing, but they have no effect on viruses. Viral infections are usually treated by managing symptoms and boosting the body's immune response. Some antiviral drugs can inhibit the replication of viruses.

5. Living Status: Bacteria are considered living organisms because they can grow and reproduce on their own. Viruses, however, are not considered living because they cannot carry out these functions without a host cell.

6. Diseases: Both bacteria and viruses can cause diseases in humans. Bacterial infections include strep throat, tuberculosis, and urinary tract infections. Viral infections include the common cold, flu, and HIV/AIDS.
