The number of protons and electrons in an atom is usually the same, making the atom electrically neutral. However, if an atom gains or loses electrons, it becomes an ion.

Let's take the example of a carbon atom. A carbon atom has 6 protons in its nucleus. Therefore, it is the 6th element on the periodic table. It also has 6 electrons orbiting the nucleus. If it were to lose or gain an electron, it would become a carbon ion.

In conclusion, atoms are the building blocks of matter, making up everything in the universe, and the type of atom (i.e., the element it represents) is determined by the number of protons in its nucleus.
