Study the information in the table below and answer the questions that follow. Theletters do not represent the symbols of the elements.Element(C) Atomic number Melting pointL 11 97.8M 13 660N 14 1440Q 17 401R 19 63.7a) Write the electrons arrangement for the atom formed by elements and M andQ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................b) Select an element whichisi) The most reactive non –metal...........................................................................................................................ii) A poor conductor ofelectricity...........................................................................................................................c) In which period of the periodic table does elements Rbelow.....................................................................................................................................d) Element R lodes its outermost electron more readily than I.Explain
Solution
a) The electron arrangement for the atoms formed by elements M and Q are as follows:
-
Element M (Atomic number 13): The electron arrangement is 2, 8, 3. This is because the first energy level holds up to 2 electrons, the second can hold up to 8, and the remaining 3 electrons will be in the third energy level.
-
Element Q (Atomic number 17): The electron arrangement is 2, 8, 7. Similar to above, the first two energy levels are filled, and the remaining 7 electrons will be in the third energy level.
b) i) The most reactive non-metal is element Q. This is because it has 7 electrons in its outermost shell and it needs one more to achieve a stable electron configuration.
ii) A poor conductor of electricity would be element N. This is because it is a non-metal and non-metals are generally poor conductors of electricity.
c) Element R is in the second period of the periodic table. This is because it has two energy levels filled with electrons.
d) Element R loses its outermost electron more readily than I because it has fewer electrons in its outermost energy level. The fewer the electrons in the outermost energy level, the less energy is required to remove them.
