The intercostal muscles between your ribs also help enlarge the chest cavity. They contract to pull your rib cage both upward and outward when you inhale.
As your lungs expand, air is sucked in through your nose or mouth. The air travels down your windpipe and into your lungs. After passing through your bronchial tubes, the air finally reaches and inflates the tiny sacs called alveoli.
This process of inhalation creates a negative pressure in the chest, meaning the pressure inside the chest is lower than the pressure outside the body. This negative pressure helps to draw air into the lungs.
So, when you breathe in, the pressure in your chest decreases relative to the outside air. This is what allows air to flow into your lungs.
