(a) Antidiuretic hormone (ADH), also known as vasopressin, is a hormone produced in the hypothalamus and stored in the posterior pituitary gland. It plays a crucial role in regulating the body's water balance.

When large amounts of ADH are produced, the following effects can be observed:

  1. Increased Water Reabsorption: ADH increases the permeability of the kidney's collecting ducts to water. This allows more water to be reabsorbed back into the bloodstream, reducing urine volume and concentrating the urine.

  2. Increased Blood Pressure: ADH also causes constriction of the blood vessels, which increases blood pressure. This is why ADH is also known as vasopressin.

  3. Hyponatremia: If too much ADH is produced, it can lead to a condition called hyponatremia. This is a low concentration of sodium in the blood, which can be dangerous and cause symptoms like nausea, headache, confusion, seizures, and in severe cases, coma or death.

(b) The loop of Henle is a part of the nephron in the kidney. It has two main functions:

  1. Concentration of Urine: The descending limb of the loop of Henle is permeable to water but not to salts, so water is reabsorbed here. The ascending limb is impermeable to water but permeable to salts, so salts are reabsorbed here. This creates a concentration gradient in the medulla of the kidney, which helps in the concentration of urine.

  2. Reabsorption of Solutes: The loop of Henle also reabsorbs solutes like sodium, chloride, and potassium from the filtrate back into the bloodstream. This helps in maintaining the electrolyte balance in the body.
