Solution

(i) In the reaction 4Na(s) + O2 (g) → 2Na2 O(s), Sodium (Na) is oxidized and Oxygen (O2) is reduced.

This is because oxidation is the loss of electrons, and in this reaction, Sodium (Na) loses its electrons to become Na2O. On the other hand, reduction is the gain of electrons, and in this reaction, Oxygen (O2) gains electrons from Sodium to become Na2O.

(ii) In the reaction CuO(s) + H2(g) → Cu(s) + H2 O(l), Copper Oxide (CuO) is reduced and Hydrogen (H2) is oxidized.

This is because Copper Oxide (CuO) gains electrons from Hydrogen to become Copper (Cu), which is a reduction process. On the other hand, Hydrogen (H2) loses its electrons to Copper Oxide to become Water (H2O), which is an oxidation process.
