Solution

Compound (B) is obtained by the reaction of methyl magnesium chloride with dry ice (solid CO2) followed by acid hydrolysis. This is a Grignard reaction, where the methyl magnesium chloride (a Grignard reagent) reacts with the dry ice to form a carboxylic acid. The carboxylic acid formed in this case is acetic acid (CH3COOH).

Compound (A) is obtained when (B) reacts with Red P and Cl2. Red P and Cl2 is a halogenation reaction, which replaces the hydrogen atoms in the compound with halogens. In this case, the acetic acid (B) reacts to form trichloroacetic acid (CCl3COOH), which is compound (A).

So, compound (A) is trichloroacetic acid and compound (B) is acetic acid.
