Celebrities, politicians, athletes, CEOs and everyday people often face rumors and gossip about wrongdoing. When this happens, the subject of the rumor may deny it to try "shut it down". Typically the denial takes a serious tone (e.g., “I did not cheat on my partner"). However, sometimes the subject may deny the rumor with a funny response using humor/jokes.  As part of this research we are trying to collect examples of situations involving claims, gossip or statements about a wrongdoing that may or may not be true. In particular, we are interested in instances where the subject of the rumor deny's it using humor. We would like you to make up your own example of a rumor that is circulating about a fictional character and over the next few pages of the survey we will ask you some questions about the rumor including how and why you might respond with humor to this rumor.Try to put yourself in the shoes of the fictional character and think about how you might respond in this situation.   We will then ask you to describe your example by answering the following types of questions over the next few pages of the survey...   1] Who is the rumor about? (e.g. who is the fictional character; a celebrity/politician/CEO/athlete/business person, everyday person)?2] What is the rumor about?3] What would the fictional person say to deny the rumor in a FUNNY way? Please record EXACTLY what the fictional person would say word for word to deny the rumor in a funny way. Be specific about the exact language they would use in quotation marks. For example, your answer could be; He would say; "Rumor has it I'm cheating on my spouse! Well, let me set the record straight: the only thing I'm guilty of is cheating on my gym routine with Netflix marathons. As for my spouse, they're the only one who gets to see me in my sweatpants and still love me.
