A clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a predicate (verb). A clause can be a complete sentence or a part of a sentence. Clauses can be classified into two categories: independent clauses and dependent clauses.

1. Independent Clause: An independent clause can stand alone as a sentence. It has a subject and a verb and forms a complete thought. For example, "She runs."

2. Dependent Clause: A dependent clause cannot stand alone as a sentence. It also has a subject and a verb, but it does not form a complete thought. For example, "Because she runs."

Dependent clauses can be further divided into three types:

a. Adverbial Clause: An adverbial clause functions as an adverb. In other words, it provides information about the verb, adjective, or adverb of the main clause. For example, "She runs when she sees a dog."

b. Adjectival Clause: An adjectival clause functions as an adjective. That is, it provides information about a noun or pronoun in the main clause. For example, "The woman who is running is my aunt."

c. Noun Clause: A noun clause functions as a noun. That is, it can be a subject, an object, or a complement. For example, "What you said is true."
