Solution

The boiling point of a substance is influenced by the strength of the forces between its molecules. These forces are known as intermolecular forces. There are three types of intermolecular forces: London dispersion forces, dipole-dipole forces, and hydrogen bonding.

  1. Propane (C3H8) is a nonpolar molecule, so it only has London dispersion forces, which are the weakest intermolecular forces.

  2. 2-propanone (CH3COCH3) is a polar molecule, so it has dipole-dipole forces and London dispersion forces. Dipole-dipole forces are stronger than London dispersion forces.

  3. Acetic acid (CH3COOH) is a polar molecule with a hydrogen directly bonded to an oxygen, so it can form hydrogen bonds, which are the strongest of the three types of intermolecular forces. It also has dipole-dipole forces and London dispersion forces.

  4. 1-propanol (CH3CH2CH2OH) is also a polar molecule that can form hydrogen bonds, as well as dipole-dipole forces and London dispersion forces.

Between acetic acid and 1-propanol, the one with the higher molecular weight usually has the higher boiling point because it has more electrons and thus stronger London dispersion forces. 1-propanol has a higher molecular weight than acetic acid, so it would have the highest boiling point of the four substances.
