Solution

The conflict between Orientalists and Anglicists was primarily based on the medium and content of education to be imparted in India during the British rule. Here are two main issues of conflict:

  1. Medium of Education: The Orientalists favored the promotion of Indian languages and wanted to educate Indians through their vernacular languages. They believed that education should be rooted in the culture and traditions of the land. On the other hand, the Anglicists argued for the promotion of English as the medium of instruction. They believed that Western education and English language would modernize India.

  2. Content of Education: The Orientalists wanted to promote traditional Indian learning and literature. They believed in preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of India. The Anglicists, however, wanted to introduce Western literature, philosophy, and science to Indians. They believed that the knowledge of the West was superior and would help in the intellectual development of Indians.

These differences in opinion led to a heated debate known as the Orientalist-Anglicist controversy during the 19th century in India.
