Solution

The solar energy is generated by a process called nuclear fusion that takes place in the sun's core. Here are the steps of this process:

  1. The sun's core is extremely hot and dense. The pressure and temperature are so high that hydrogen atoms come close enough to each other to combine and form helium. This process is known as nuclear fusion.

  2. In nuclear fusion, four hydrogen nuclei combine to form one helium nucleus. However, the mass of one helium nucleus is less than the total mass of the four hydrogen nuclei that combined. The missing mass is converted into energy according to Einstein's equation, E=mc^2, where E is energy, m is mass, and c is the speed of light.

  3. This energy is then radiated out from the core towards the surface of the sun. It travels through a layer called the radiative zone, where it is absorbed and re-emitted multiple times, slowing its progress.

  4. The energy then reaches the convective zone, where it is carried by large currents of hot, rising gas and cool, sinking gas.

  5. Finally, the energy reaches the surface of the sun and is radiated into space as light and heat. This is the solar energy that we receive on Earth.

  6. The light from the sun takes about 8 minutes to reach Earth, while the energy carried by solar particles can take several days to reach Earth.
