Solution

Fractional distillation is a process used to separate a mixture of liquids with different boiling points. Here's how you would use it to separate a mixture of methanol, ethanol, and propanol:

  1. Preparation: First, you would mix the three liquids together in a distillation flask. This flask is connected to a fractional distillation column, which is a long, vertical tube filled with glass beads. The column is designed to provide a large surface area for the vapor to condense on.

  2. Heating: Next, you would heat the mixture. The liquid with the lowest boiling point (in this case, methanol) will start to vaporize first.

  3. Rising Vapor: The vapor rises up the distillation column. As it rises, it cools and condenses on the glass beads. The condensed liquid then drips back down into the flask.

  4. Re-Vaporization and Separation: The heat causes the condensed liquid to re-vaporize. This process of vaporization, condensation, and re-vaporization continues as the vapor rises up the column. Each time the vapor condenses and re-vaporizes, the concentration of the liquid with the lowest boiling point increases. By the time the vapor reaches the top of the column, it is almost pure methanol.

  5. Collection: The methanol vapor then passes into a condenser, where it is cooled and collected as a liquid in a separate flask.

  6. Repetition for Remaining Liquids: After all the methanol has been collected, you would raise the temperature to the boiling point of the next liquid (ethanol). The process is repeated to separate the ethanol from the propanol. Finally, the temperature is raised to the boiling point of propanol to separate it from any remaining substances.

This process allows you to separate the three liquids based on their different boiling points.
