TOKYO, Japan (Achieve3000, February 17, 2011). Japanese company Sony is nearly ready to unveil its latest portable gaming device. The successor to the handheld gaming console PlayStation Portable (PSP) will go on sale late in 2011. Sony officials say the new product, named "Next Generation Portable" (NGP) for now, will offer on-the-go games with the quality of a home video game console.Sony's new machine comes packed with amazing features that will establish the console's preeminence among gaming devices, the company maintains. A motion sensor and GPS technology will allow gamers to tilt and sway the machine to play golf games, attack monsters, and experience other "virtual realities," said Kazuo Hirai, who heads Sony Corporation's gaming section. In addition, the NGP has a touch panel in the front and touch pads in the back, allowing players to tap on the machine to move images in a new way, in addition to being able to move images with the usual buttons and switches.According to Sony, the NGP will be easy to use. It will have a wireless connection so that players can get online anywhere Wi-Fi is available. This will allow for more downloading of games and social networking with other gamers. The NGP's five-inch screen is OLED. OLED offers good color and image quality that is about four times better than the current PSP, which has a liquid-crystal display. Sony says that gamers using the NGP will be able to experience games they play on the PlayStation 3 home console without any drop in quality.Sony devised the NGP to help it ward off competition from its rivals, companies that regularly introduce new features to their products. Nintendo, for example, is bringing to market a new and improved version of its portable gaming system, the DS, with 3-D capabilities. The NGP won't include 3-D. Apple, meanwhile, manufactures the iPad and the iPhone, both portable devices that support games and have been extremely successful on the market. While PlayStation Portable sales have been dropping (to about 2.7 million for April-September 2010), Apple sold 16.2 million iPhones during the October-December quarter of 2010 alone. As smart phones become more popular, people are getting used to being able to play games, watch videos, send e-mails, and chat, all on one versatile device, which creates a potential threat for game machine makers like Sony.Hoping to get ahead in the portable gaming market, Sony officials recently showed a prototype of the NGP to reporters. Hirai proudly held up the shiny black machine for the cameras, declaring, "This is the NGP." Hirai brought on stage several game software developers who showed footage of PlayStation 3 games adapted for NGP to illustrate the device's incredible graphics quality.Ricardo Torres, editor-in-chief of GameSpot, an online gaming review Web site, was impressed."The graphic fidelity of the games shown was impressive and made all the more eye-popping by that OLED screen, which is gorgeous," Torres said.Hirai promised that the NGP would soon have a new name and a gamut of games."We will pursue the ultimate in entertainment," said Hirai, adding, "We want to create a revolution in your hands."
