Solution

  1. Definition: In physics, force is defined as any interaction that, when unopposed, will change the motion of an object. It can cause an object with mass to change its velocity, i.e., to accelerate. Force can also be described as a push or pull on an object resulting from the object's interaction with another object.

  2. Examples of forces in everyday life:

    a. Gravity: This is the force that attracts two bodies towards each other. For instance, when you drop an apple, it falls to the ground because of gravity.

    b. Friction: This is the force that opposes the motion of one surface over another. For example, when you slide a book across a table, it eventually stops because of friction.

    c. Tension: This is the force transmitted through a string, rope, cable or similar object when it is pulled tight by forces acting from opposite ends. For example, when you pull a rope in a tug of war game, the tension in the rope increases.

    d. Normal Force: This is the support force exerted upon an object that is in contact with another stable object. For example, a book resting on a table experiences the normal force. The table pushes up on the book, preventing it from falling through the table and towards the center of the Earth.

    e. Applied Force: This is a force that is applied to an object by a person or another object. For example, if you push a lawn mower, you are applying a force to it.
