Solution

i) Decision Making Process (Simon's Model)

Simon's model of decision making consists of three steps:

  1. Intelligence: This is the first step where the need for a decision becomes apparent. If there's a problem, it is identified and defined in this stage. Information is gathered, possible causes of the problem are identified, and a decision is made on whether further action is necessary.

  2. Design: In this stage, alternative solutions to the problem are developed. The pros and cons of each solution are evaluated, and the most effective solution is chosen.

  3. Choice: This is the final stage where the chosen solution is implemented. The results are monitored to ensure that the decision was effective.

ii) Steps of Supply Chain

The supply chain process can be broken down into five main steps:

  1. Plan: This is the strategic portion of supply chain management. You need a strategy for managing all the resources that go toward meeting customer demand for your product or service.

  2. Source: Choose your suppliers for the goods and services you need, then develop processes to monitor and manage supplier relationships.

  3. Make: This step involves scheduling, testing, packaging, and preparing for delivery.

  4. Deliver: This is the logistics part. Coordinate the receipt of orders, pick carriers to get products to customers, set up invoicing systems to receive payments.

  5. Return: This is the part of the supply chain where businesses deal with returned or defective products.

iii) Types of Decision Support Systems (DSS)

  1. Model-driven DSS: These systems use some type of model to perform analysis on data inputs. They are used when the problem is understood but the solution is not.

  2. Data-driven DSS: These systems are used when the problem is not well understood, and they help to identify patterns or trends in data.

  3. Knowledge-driven DSS: These systems provide specialized problem-solving expertise stored as facts, rules, and procedures.

  4. Document-driven DSS: These systems manage, retrieve, and manipulate unstructured information in a variety of electronic formats.

  5. Communication-driven DSS: These systems are used for communication, collaboration, and coordination in team and group decision-making situations.
