The reactions are triggered by clotting factors, proteins in the blood that are activated in a specific sequence. The end result of the coagulation phase is the conversion of fibrinogen, a soluble protein, into fibrin, an insoluble protein that forms the meshwork of the blood clot.

The coagulation pathway can be further divided into two pathways: the intrinsic pathway and the extrinsic pathway. The intrinsic pathway is activated by damage to the inside of the blood vessel, while the extrinsic pathway is activated by damage to the outside of the blood vessel. Both pathways lead to the activation of factor X, which triggers the common pathway. The common pathway leads to the formation of a blood clot.
