The NADH and FADH2 produced in the previous steps are used to create a large amount of ATP. Oxygen is the final electron acceptor in this process, and it is reduced to form water.

So, while the process begins in the cytoplasm, the majority of aerobic respiration and ATP production occurs in the mitochondria.
