  4. Electron Transport Chain: This is the final step of aerobic respiration and it occurs in the inner mitochondrial membrane. The electrons from NADH and FADH2 are passed along a series of proteins in the membrane. This process pumps protons across the membrane, creating a gradient. The protons flow back across the membrane through a protein called ATP synthase, which uses the energy to produce ATP. Oxygen is the final electron acceptor in this process, and it combines with electrons and protons to form water.

So, the mitochondrion is the organelle responsible for most of the steps of aerobic respiration, and it is where the majority of the cell's ATP is produced.
