Solution

The perception of nationalism as positive or negative can be influenced by several factors:

  1. Expression: Nationalism can be expressed in a variety of ways. If it is expressed through pride in one's country and a desire to contribute positively to it, it can be seen as a positive force. However, if it is expressed through hostility towards other nations or ethnicities, it can be seen as a negative force.

  2. Interpretation: How nationalism is interpreted can also impact whether it is seen as positive or negative. For example, some people may interpret displays of nationalism as a sign of patriotism and love for one's country. Others, however, may see it as a sign of arrogance or superiority.

  3. Impact on Others: Nationalism can also be judged based on its impact on others. If it leads to discrimination, violence, or other forms of harm towards people from other nations, it is likely to be seen as negative. On the other hand, if it promotes unity, cooperation, and mutual respect among citizens, it can be seen as positive.

  4. Historical Context: The historical context can also play a role in how nationalism is perceived. In countries with a history of aggressive nationalism, such expressions may be viewed more negatively. Conversely, in countries where nationalism has played a role in achieving independence or other positive outcomes, it may be viewed more positively.

  5. Political Context: The political context can also influence perceptions of nationalism. In times of political instability or conflict, nationalism may be seen as a unifying force and therefore viewed positively. However, in times of peace and stability, aggressive nationalism may be seen as unnecessary and harmful, and therefore viewed negatively.

What would you say were the advantages and disadvantages of nationalism?

Nationalism, of course, is a curious phenomenon which at a certain stage in a country's history gives life, growth and unity but, at the same time, it has a tendency to limit one, because one thinks of one's country as something different from the rest of world. One's perceptive changes and one is continuously thinking of one's own struggles and virtues and failing to the exclusion of other thoughts.
