In our everyday environment, we are exposed to various sources of radioactivity. These sources can be categorized into two main types: natural and man-made.

1. Natural Sources: These are the sources of radioactivity that exist naturally in our environment. They include:

   a. Cosmic Radiation: This comes from the sun and outer space. The amount of exposure to this type of radiation depends on our altitude and latitude.

   b. Terrestrial Radiation: This comes from radioactive materials in the earth's crust, like uranium, thorium, and radon. We are exposed to this type of radiation when we come in contact with soil, rocks, and water.

   c. Internal Radiation: This comes from radioactive substances that we ingest or inhale, like radon and certain isotopes of potassium and carbon.

2. Man-Made Sources: These are the sources of radioactivity that are a result of human activities. They include:

   a. Medical Procedures: Certain medical procedures, like X-rays and radiation therapy, expose us to radiation.

   b. Nuclear Power Plants: These facilities produce radioactive waste, which can potentially expose us to radiation.

   c. Consumer Products: Certain products, like smoke detectors and certain types of pottery and glass, contain small amounts of radioactive materials.

   d. Nuclear Weapons Testing and Accidents: These events can release large amounts of radioactive materials into the environment, leading to exposure.

In general, while exposure to radioactivity is unavoidable, the levels we are exposed to in our everyday environment are usually low and do not pose a significant health risk.
