Some animals are endangered. Animals become endangered when they are threatened by changing environmental conditions or by hunting, or when they have simply become very few in number. Tigers are some of the most endangered animals in the world. They have a high risk of becoming extinct. If tigers become extinct, this means they will no longer exist; they will have been completely wiped out. There are only about 3000 tigers now in the wild, and that number is shrinking. Many people are passionate about saving the tiger, but they disagree about the best way to do so.Some people argue that in this urgent situation, the only thing we should focus on is preventing hunters from killing tigers. They compare the situation to an emergency room. If a bleeding person comes into the emergency room, the doctor does not say, “How did this person get here? How can we keep this from happening again?” The doctor fixes the wounds first and asks questions later. These people argue that tigers are in the emergency room. There is no time to do research or try a broad approach to help them. Instead, we should focus all money and efforts on law enforcement to prevent people from hunting tigers illegally. Later, when the tiger population has stabilized and is no longer shrinking, there will be time to focus on education campaigns and research.Others disagree, saying that while law enforcement is important, it is equally important to address the causes of the problem. Factors such as the medicine trade for tiger parts and the high price of tiger skins motivate people to keep hunting tigers. If we want people to agree to stop killing tigers, we must educate them about the very real possibility that one day there will be no tigers left. To return to the emergency room comparison, the doctor may treat wounds first, but if no one asks questions about how someone got hurt or tries to change that person’s behavior, the injury can happen again and again. If we really want to end the illegal hunting of tigers, we must do more than just arrest hunters.
