Solution

Complete Combustion:

  1. Complete combustion occurs when there is a sufficient and adequate supply of oxygen.
  2. It produces a large amount of heat and light energy.
  3. The products of complete combustion are carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O).
  4. It leaves no residue behind.
  5. It is a clean process as it does not produce harmful gases, except for the carbon dioxide which contributes to global warming.
  6. An example of complete combustion is the burning of candles.

Incomplete Combustion:

  1. Incomplete combustion occurs when the supply of oxygen is insufficient.
  2. It produces less amount of heat and light energy compared to complete combustion.
  3. The products of incomplete combustion are carbon monoxide (CO), carbon (C) or soot, and water (H2O).
  4. It leaves a residue of soot or smoke.
  5. It is not a clean process as it produces harmful gases like carbon monoxide which is poisonous to humans and animals.
  6. An example of incomplete combustion is the burning of fuels in engines or stoves with poor ventilation.
