Solution

a) Water scarcity is defined as the lack of sufficient available water resources to meet the demands of water usage within a region. It already affects every continent and around 2.8 billion people around the world at least one month out of every year.

b) Economic water scarcity is caused by a lack of investment in water infrastructure or insufficient human capacity to satisfy the demand of water in areas where the population cannot afford to use an adequate source of water. Physical water scarcity is when there is not enough water to meet both human demands and those of ecosystems to function effectively.

c) According to Figure 1, two regions where water scarcity occurs are North Africa and the Middle East.

d) Two reasons that could contribute to the risk of physical water scarcity are climate change, which can cause changes in weather patterns leading to droughts or floods, and overpopulation, which can lead to increased demand for water.

e) Water security could be improved by implementing water conservation practices, improving water infrastructure, and investing in new water technology. Additionally, policies could be put in place to manage water resources and ensure equitable access for all.

f) Conflict over water may occur between neighbouring countries due to the shared use of a water source. If one country extracts or pollutes the water in a way that harms the other country, it can lead to conflict. Additionally, if water resources become scarce, countries may compete for access to these resources, leading to further conflict.
