Solution

The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a tracking system used on ships and by vessel traffic services for identifying and locating vessels by electronically exchanging data with other nearby ships and AIS Base stations. AIS information can be categorized into two types: Static and Dynamic.

  1. Static Information: This is the information about the ship that does not change over time. It includes:

    • MMSI (Maritime Mobile Service Identity): This is a unique identification number for each vessel.
    • Call Sign: This is the international radio call sign assigned to the vessel.
    • Name: The official name of the vessel.
    • Type of Ship: The category of the ship, such as cargo, tanker, passenger, etc.
    • Dimensions: The size of the ship, including length and breadth.
    • Location of positioning system: The place on the ship where the GPS receiver is located.
    • Draught: The maximum depth of water a ship can safely navigate.
  2. Dynamic Information: This is the information about the ship that changes frequently. It includes:

    • Ship's Position: The current geographical location of the ship.
    • Speed Over Ground (SOG): The speed of the ship relative to the ground.
    • Course Over Ground (COG): The direction in which the ship is moving relative to the ground.
    • Heading: The direction in which the ship's bow is pointing.
    • Navigational Status: The current status of the ship, such as anchored, under way using engine, not under command, etc.
    • Rate of Turn: How quickly the ship is changing its heading.
    • Destination: The ship's intended destination.

These two types of information provide a comprehensive picture of a vessel's identity, position, course, and speed, which is crucial for maritime safety and security.
