  1. Dr. Jose Rizal, a national hero of the Philippines, had an extensive educational background abroad. He first left the Philippines in 1882 to study in Spain. He enrolled in Universidad Central de Madrid where he pursued courses in Philosophy and Letters, as well as Medicine. He completed his studies in Spain in 1884 and earned the degree of Licentiate in Medicine and Philosophy and Letters.

In addition to his studies in Spain, Rizal also studied at the University of Paris and the University of Heidelberg in Germany. In Paris, he continued his studies in ophthalmology. At Heidelberg, he studied under the famed professor Otto Becker. Rizal completed his eye specialization in 1887.

While studying abroad, Rizal wrote his two novels, "Noli Me Tangere" and "El Filibusterismo," which exposed the ills of Philippine society under Spanish rule. He also became involved in the Propaganda Movement, joining others in calling for reforms in the Philippines.
