Solution

When setting up our work environment at the beginning of each lab, we create a file geodatabase.

Here are the steps:

  1. Open ArcCatalog or the Catalog window in ArcMap.

  2. Navigate to the location where you want to create the geodatabase. You can create a geodatabase in any folder you have write access to.

  3. Right-click the folder in which you want to create the new geodatabase.

  4. Point to New.

  5. Click File Geodatabase. A new file geodatabase appears in the Catalog tree with a default name (for example, New File Geodatabase.gdb).

  6. Type a name for the geodatabase. Press ENTER.

The geodatabase name must start with a letter, not contain spaces, and not contain certain special characters. If the name is not valid, you will not be able to rename the geodatabase.
