Solution

A carbon atom is neutral because it has an equal number of protons and electrons. Protons carry a positive charge and electrons carry a negative charge. In a carbon atom, there are 6 protons in the nucleus and 6 electrons orbiting the nucleus. The charges of the protons and electrons cancel each other out, making the atom neutral. Neutrons, which are also located in the nucleus, do not carry a charge and therefore do not affect the overall charge of the atom.
