Define the roles that each branch serve in the government and the powers they have to fulfill those roles.

The United States government is divided into three branches: the legislative branch, the executive branch, and the judicial branch. Each branch has its own roles and powers.

1. Legislative Branch: This branch is responsible for making laws. It is made up of two houses, the Senate and the House of Representatives, collectively known as Congress. The powers of the legislative branch include the ability to pass laws, originate spending bills (House), impeach officials (Senate), and approve treaties (Senate).

2. Executive Branch: This branch is responsible for implementing and enforcing laws. It is headed by the President, who is the chief executive. The powers of the executive branch include the ability to veto laws, appoint members of the Cabinet, and negotiate treaties with foreign powers, among others. The President is also the Commander in Chief of the United States Armed Forces.

3. Judicial Branch: This branch is responsible for interpreting laws and the Constitution. It is made up of the Supreme Court and other federal courts. The powers of the judicial branch include the ability to declare laws unconstitutional, interpret the Constitution and other laws, and handle cases that involve federal laws.

Each branch has checks and balances over the others to prevent any one branch from becoming too powerful. For example, the President can veto a law passed by Congress, but Congress can override that veto with a two-thirds vote. Similarly, the Supreme Court can declare a law passed by Congress or an action by the President unconstitutional.
