Solution

Data Analysts and Data Scientists both work with data, but they perform different roles.

  1. Role:

    • A Data Analyst interprets data and turns it into information which can offer ways to improve a business, thus affecting business decisions. Data Analysts gather information from various sources and interpret patterns and trends.
    • A Data Scientist, on the other hand, designs and constructs new processes for data modeling and production using prototypes, algorithms, predictive models, and custom analysis.
  2. Skills:

    • Data Analysts are proficient in SQL, using it to query databases and perform analyses. They also need to be proficient in Excel or similar tools, and have a good understanding of statistical analysis.
    • Data Scientists need to be proficient in SQL, R or Python, and need to have a good understanding of machine learning techniques and advanced statistical modeling. They also need to be proficient in big data platforms and tools like Hadoop, Hive, and Pig.
  3. Scope:

    • Data Analysts are typically involved in the day-to-day operational work and their scope is somewhat limited to the data they are given to analyze.
    • Data Scientists are involved in strategic decision making and planning at a higher level, using their data and predictive models to inform business strategies.
  4. Depth of the Role:

    • Data Analysts are more focused on understanding the 'what' aspect of the data. They analyze the data to find out what happened.
    • Data Scientists focus on the 'why' aspect. They not only analyze the data but also interpret it to predict what might happen in the future.
  5. Salary:

    • Generally, Data Scientists earn more than Data Analysts, due to the complexity of their work and the additional skills required.
