Baseball Hall of Famer Leo Durocher once said, "There are only five things you can do in baseball—run, throw, catch, hit, and hit with power." Clearly, Durocher never played for the Savannah Bananas. In addition to doing all of the above, the members of this high-spirited baseball team perform dance routines during games. And judging from their skyrocketing popularity—the team's TikTok videos get millions of hits—baseball fans everywhere are going bananas. The Savannah Bananas were founded in 2016 as part of a minor league that competes every summer in the Southeastern United States. The team's co-owner, Jesse Cole, began experimenting with adding dance to the game, and the novelty caught on. Newfound fans started packing the stadium like bananas in a crate! Some of the team's dances are seemingly spontaneous solo turns. There's the batter who boogeys into the batter's box to the rap song "Hit the Quan." Then there's the first-base coach who launches into a string of perfectly executed ballet moves. Even the umpires get in on the action, at times punctuating a strikeout call with 'N Sync's "Bye Bye Bye" dance. Other performances are group numbers, like when the pitcher, middle infielders, and center fielder do the latest TikTok dance challenge. Then there are the full ensemble dances in which the entire team breaks into a shared groove. But the entertainment isn't limited to dancing. Every Bananas home game assumes a carnival-like atmosphere. Players balance on stilts, wield fiery bats, and wear kilts. They perform backflips and splits. There's also a group of line-dancing women over age 65 called the Banana Nanas and a cheering squad known as the Savannah Man-Nanas. Put all that together, and you've got a spectacle that rivals a circus. But the Bananas aren't just monkeying around. The unconventional team has won the Coastal Plain League championship three times. And in 2022, 11 of its players were drafted or signed by major league teams. "We believe when you have fun, you play better," Cole proclaims on the team's website. The team's showmanship certainly paid off. In addition to their on-field success, all 4,000 seats were regularly sold out at the historic Grayson Stadium in Savannah, Georgia. In fact, over a million people attended Bananas games at the ballpark. These are impressive numbers for a summer minor league team, especially at a time when attendance at Major League Baseball (MLB) games has been on the decline.Contrarily, the Bananas' appeal just keeps ripening. In the summer of 2022, ESPN aired Bananaland, a TV docuseries about the team. And in 2023, the Bananas will become a professional travel team, taking their antics on a 20-city national tour, playing teams from other independent leagues. However, they won't exactly be playing baseball. "Banana Ball," as they call it, features a two-hour time limit, a sudden-death playoff in case of a tie, and other amped-up innovations, including plenty of dancing. (Think of the Harlem Globetrotters but with baseballs instead of basketballs.)Why mess with America's favorite pastime? A traditional baseball game can last over three hours, and there might not be much action from game to game. The Bananas want to ensure their games are always fun and entertaining. Will this new version of the sport be the wave of the future? With 80,000 fans on the Banana Ball waiting list for ticket requests, the Savannah Bananas may be on to something. One might even say they are hitting it out of the park.Think about and discuss these questions:What facts would you choose to show that the Savannah Bananas are a success? Is there a sport, activity, or event you'd like to add more fun to?
