Solution

The kidneys perform two main functions:

  1. Filtration of Blood: This is the first step in the process of urine formation. The kidneys filter out waste products, toxins, and excess substances such as water, salts, and electrolytes from the bloodstream. This filtration process occurs in the glomerulus, a network of tiny blood vessels in the nephrons, which are the functional units of the kidneys.

  2. Reabsorption: After filtration, the filtered blood flows through the renal tubules. Here, most of the minerals, nutrients, and water are reabsorbed back into the bloodstream. This process ensures that the body retains necessary substances for its functioning.

The kidneys do not break down blood; instead, they filter it. Also, they do not absorb nutrients; they reabsorb minerals and nutrients that have been filtered out back into the blood. The waste substances that are not reabsorbed form urine, which is excreted from the body.

The kidneys form a part of the body’s excretory system. Blood arrives at the kidneys via the renal artery and leaves via renal veins. Nephrons are the functional unit of the kidney and the site of urine production.Describe the process that occurs within the nephrons of the kidneys to produce urine from blood arriving from the renal artery.

During the process of urine formation, molecules and ions are passively and actively reabsorbed from the the glomerular filtrate back into the blood of the peritubular capillary network. This is called tubular .
