The endocrine system is responsible for producing hormones. The signalling molecules elicit a range of responses in the body.Why do some cells respond to a certain hormone, but others do not?

The reason why some cells respond to certain hormones while others do not is due to the presence of specific receptors on the cells. Hormones can be thought of as keys, and the receptors as locks. Only a specific key (hormone) can open a specific lock (receptor).

1. Hormone Production: The endocrine system produces hormones, which are signaling molecules. These hormones are released into the bloodstream.

2. Hormone Distribution: Once in the bloodstream, these hormones travel throughout the body. However, they can only affect cells that have the appropriate receptor.

3. Receptor Binding: When a hormone encounters a cell with the correct receptor, it binds to that receptor. This is like a key fitting into a lock.

4. Cellular Response: Once the hormone has bound to the receptor, it triggers a specific response within the cell. This could be anything from changing the cell's behavior, to initiating the production of certain proteins.

5. Cells Without the Receptor: If a cell does not have the correct receptor for a particular hormone, it will not be affected by that hormone. The hormone cannot bind to the cell, and therefore cannot trigger a response.

So, the presence or absence of specific hormone receptors on a cell determines whether or not it will respond to a particular hormone.
