A homojunction is a type of junction in semiconductors that is formed by joining two similar semiconductor materials but with different doping levels. The two sides of the junction are called the p-type and n-type semiconductors. The p-type is doped with impurities that create excess holes, while the n-type is doped with impurities that create excess electrons.

For example, consider a silicon crystal (Si). If one side of the Si crystal is doped with boron (B), it becomes a p-type semiconductor because B has one less electron than Si, creating a hole. If the other side of the Si crystal is doped with phosphorus (P), it becomes an n-type semiconductor because P has one more electron than Si, creating an excess electron.

When these two sides are joined together, they form a p-n junction, which is a basic component of many electronic devices such as diodes and transistors. The region around the junction where the p-type and n-type meet is called the depletion region. This region acts as a barrier that prevents the flow of electrons from the n-type to the p-type and holes from the p-type to the n-type. However, when a voltage is applied across the junction, it can overcome this barrier and allow current to flow.
