Solution

Water treatment is a process that improves the quality of water to make it suitable for a specific end-use. The end-use may be drinking, industrial water supply, irrigation, river flow maintenance, water recreation, or many other uses.

  1. Collection: This is the first step in the water treatment process. The untreated water is collected in reservoirs from the surface water like rivers, lakes, and sometimes from underground water.

  2. Screening: The water collected in the reservoir is then passed through screens to remove large particles like leaves, sticks, rags, trash etc.

  3. Coagulation: A substance called a coagulant is added to the water, which causes the particles in the water to clump together.

  4. Sedimentation: As the particles clump together, they form larger particles which are heavy enough to settle to the bottom of a basin from where they can be removed.

  5. Filtration: The clear water on top then passes through filters of varying sizes that remove remaining small particles.

  6. Disinfection: After the water has been filtered, a disinfectant (like chlorine) may be added in order to kill any remaining parasites, bacteria, and viruses, and to protect the water from germs when it is piped to homes and businesses.

  7. Storage: Water is placed in a closed tank or reservoir where it flows through pipes to homes and businesses in the community.

  8. Distribution: Treated water is then pumped into pipes that distribute it to the community.

In conclusion, water treatment is a very important process that ensures the safety and quality of water that is consumed or used by communities. It helps to remove impurities and make water safe for drinking and other uses.
